Exercise found to be almost as effective as Sildenafil in overcoming erectile dysfunction.
A trio of medical scientists have found that many men with erectile dysfunction can solve many of their problems simply by doing aerobic exercise In this study, reported in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Mohit Khera, Sameer Bhattacharya and Larry Miller analyzed the results of 11 randomized controlled trials that examined the effects of exercise and drugs such as Sildenafil on treating men with erectile dysfunction.
Previous studies have shown that many older men face the problem of being unable to achieve an erection when they want to have sex. In the new study, researchers found that erectile dysfunction is often linked to cardiovascular health and related conditions such as inflammation, narrowing and hardening of the arteries. It has also been shown that regular aerobic exercise can reduce symptoms of cardiovascular disease. So researchers wondered if this approach could help men with erectile dysfunction.
To find out, the researchers searched several databases containing information related to erectile dysfunction research. They found 11 randomized controlled trials in which volunteers with erectile dysfunction were prescribed medication to treat symptoms and others were prescribed exercise.
The results showed that prescribing aerobic exercise was almost as effective as prescribing medications such as Sildenafil. Specifically, of the 1,100 men who participated in the study, 600 exercised for 30-60 minutes three to five times a week. Another 500 were part of the control group.
The scientists involved in the study found that the volunteers who participated in the physical therapy improved erectile function by five points. The more severe the symptoms, the greater the improvement. Volunteers who took Cenforce or Cialis also improved between four and eight points, while those who took testosterone improved by only two points.
The researchers noted that exercise, unlike medications, has few side effects.
